Senegal is chronically vulnerable to natural disasters (particularly drought and flooding), its agricultural sector has declined over time, it imports about 46% of its food requirements, its ground water tables is falling 20 feet per years in many places, and it is vulnerable to food price spikes.

The region has been significantly deforested with sparse savanna-like vegetation remaining. Rain-fed agriculture is the main support for the region.

The 250 farmers involved in the project come from 12 villages. The area is suitable for agriculture and market gardening, locals practice traditional agriculture and livestock farming. Senegalese and Gambian merchants buy in large quantities at the border, making for plenty of market opportunities for Forest Garden farmers.

Goals

1’000’000 trees to be planted

250 farmers involved

  • Reforesting a highly deforested region with savanna-like vegetation remaining

  • A forest garden approach that can be duplicated by other farmers
